Morika has been making tofu in Saga since around the Ansei era of the 1850s. It's a takeaway counter, not a restaurant, so come for the plain Saga tofu, the hirosu fritters, or karashi tofu with very hot mustard hidden in the middle.
Insider tip
Tofu's best eaten the day you buy it, so it suits a kitchen or a picnic more than a souvenir bag. Fried items keep two days in the fridge. It's closed on Wednesdays and some Tuesdays. Seiryo-ji's gate is a short walk away.

For a cheaper yuba lunch, Ukiya Kiyomizu Kisseian does a Kyo-yuba set for ¥1,450 in a Taisho-era storehouse facing Sannenzaka. In Arashiyama, Saga Tofu Morika has made tofu since around the 1850s. It's takeaway only, so pick up plain Saga tofu, hirosu fritters or karashi tofu (there's very hot mustard hidden in the middle) for a picnic. The tofu's best eaten the day you buy it.

Masked players act out plays without a word on Seiryo-ji's kyogen stage, one of Kyoto's three great nembutsu kyogen and an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. This autumn it's Hashi Benkei, Shibari Bozu and Tsuchigumo from 13:30, after a show of Momijigari by former members at 11:30, and it's free and goes ahead in rain.

Three giant torches are lit in front of the main hall around 20:00 to recall the Buddha's cremation. Before that, from 15:30, you can watch Saga Dainembutsu Kyogen, one of Kyoto's three nembutsu kyogen, masked plays without words, for free.

The festival of the Atago and Nonomiya shrines: on its last day about 600 bearers carry the mikoshi round Saga and across Togetsukyo, behind halberd floats and a children's procession. The mikoshi come out to the otabisho a week earlier.

Arashiyama is on Kyoto's north-western edge, where Togetsukyo Bridge crosses the Oi River with wooded hills right behind it.
