Konchi-in is a Nanzen-ji subtemple, moved to this spot in 1605, whose Crane and Turtle Garden by Kobori Enshu is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, with a crane island and a turtle island facing each other behind a bed of white gravel. Its Toshogu shrine, built in 1628, has a dragon on the worship hall ceiling painted by Kano Tan'yu.
Insider tip
The Hassoseki tea room, an Important Cultural Property, can only be seen if you book ahead by phone or return postcard. It's a few minutes' walk from Nanzen-ji's Sanmon, so pair the two.

A monk guides a group of 30 through the normally closed Seiryoden Ohiru-no-ma of the Hojo and the inner sanctum of the Sanmon gate. Photography is banned, guidance is in Japanese, and the ticket includes entry to Nanzen-in afterwards. Held only on 3, 7, 8, 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 Nov.

Art museums, Meiji gardens and Nanzen-ji along the Lake Biwa Canal
