Blue Bottle's first cafe in Kansai opened in March 2018 in a two-storey machiya more than 100 years old, a few minutes' walk from Nanzen-ji. Inside, the old posts, beams and bare clay walls stay, under a tall open ceiling with big windows.
Insider tip
It opens at 9:00 every day, and it's at its quietest just after opening, before the daytime crowds. There are 44 seats and a terrace in the courtyard garden, and Keage Station is about six minutes away on foot.

A monk guides a group of 30 through the normally closed Seiryoden Ohiru-no-ma of the Hojo and the inner sanctum of the Sanmon gate. Photography is banned, guidance is in Japanese, and the ticket includes entry to Nanzen-in afterwards. Held only on 3, 7, 8, 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 Nov.

Boat rides along the Okazaki canal under the cherry trees from Nanzenji Funatamari, with a departure every 15 minutes from 9:30 to 16:30. Extra boats may run.

On seven autumn days the zoo stays open until 20:00 and is lit after dark, with keeper talks at 17:30, 18:00 and 18:30 and an outdoor film at 19:00 from 12 Oct. Entry is the usual ¥750, free for junior high school students and younger, and gorillas, monkeys and some birds aren't on show at night.
