Shinpuhkan wraps around the old Kyoto Central Telephone Office, a 1926 building by Yoshida Tetsuro that in 1983 became the first entry on Kyoto City's list of designated and registered cultural properties. It reopened in June 2020 with about 20 shops, the Uplink Kyoto cinema in the basement and Ace Hotel Kyoto, the chain's first in Japan, whose design Kengo Kuma supervised. A passage cuts through it from Karasuma-dori to Higashinotoin-dori.
Insider tip
It connects straight to the south gate of Karasuma Oike Station from the second basement. Shops open 11:00 to 20:00, but each one keeps its own hours. The builders dug up stones from a Muromachi-era garden on the site, and the complex has set them out again.

Ace Hotel Kyoto, the chain's first in Japan, is part of Shinpuhkan and connects straight to Karasuma Oike Station. Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo is 6 minutes from exit 2 of Shijo Station. Inoda Coffee's main shop opens at 7:00, and the Kyoto International Manga Museum is there for a wet day. Skip mid-July unless you're coming for the Gion Matsuri, when its floats stand in these streets for the yoiyama evenings of 14 to 16 July.

The second procession, revived in 2014, leaves Karasuma-Oike at 9:30 and runs the first route the other way. The Hanagasa parade sets off from Shimogyo Junior High for the Otabisho and Yasaka Shrine, and from about 16:00 the mikoshi go back to the shrine.

Marking 400 years since Emperor Go-Mizunoo's visit to Nijo Castle, the museum shows the Kan'ei culture of Hon'ami Koetsu, Tawaraya Sotatsu and Nonomura Ninsei, with scrolls and screens of the imperial procession and a Kano Sanraku hawk painting from Nijo Castle. It's closed on Mondays (open 12 Oct) and 13 Oct, and the ticket covers the permanent galleries too.

Kyoto's old bank corner, with kimono streets one block back
Shijo-Karasuma is the crossing where the subway meets the Hankyu line from Osaka, and by 1915 three of the big banks stood on it. It doesn't look much like the Kyoto on the posters. Walk one block west, though, and you're on Muromachi-dori, the old kimono wholesalers' street, near the lanes where the Gion Matsuri floats are built every July.
